The history of men's wedding bands is a fascinating reflection of changing cultural norms, fashion, and technological innovation. From simple gold circles to modern masterpieces of metallurgy, let's explore how these symbols of commitment have transformed through the generations.
A Modest Beginning: 1900s-1940s
Before World War II, men's wedding bands were something of a rarity. Those who did wear them typically chose understated gold bands, though some more free spirits embraced the flowing, nature-inspired motifs of the Art Nouveau movement. Our Gatsby ring is reminiscent of the gold bands of this time period.
This was also the time period that tungsten carbide - a metal that would become popular later down the line - went into production, having been first synthesized in 1893. By 1922, tungsten carbide was being used for precision cutting and milling of steel.
It also began replacing carbon filaments in electric lamps; in approximately 1903, United States chemist William D. Coolidge discovered how to make tungsten wire by packing tungsten powder into thin bars, sintering them at high temperatures, and then shaping the bars into fine wires. Tungsten’s high heat resistance and strength ensured that the filaments could serve their purpose for a longer time.
The Post-War Revolution: 1950s-1960s
World War II transformed the landscape of men's wedding bands. Soldiers wore rings as precious reminders of home, and this wartime practice evolved into a peacetime tradition. As prosperity grew, so did the bands themselves – literally. Thicker rings became fashionable, and men began exploring textured finishes and sophisticated engravings. Our Armory ring harkens back to this style.
Once again, tungsten carbide played a prominent role in this era, but not in the form of jewelry. In the post-war boom in the weapons industry, tungsten alloys served as raw materials for a variety of weapons and armaments. Its density made it ideal for armor-piercing bullets, and its high heat resistance was useful for jet engine components that could survive extreme temperatures and stress.
Breaking Boundaries: 1970s-1980s
The experimental spirit of the '70s and '80s ushered in an era of bold creativity. White gold emerged as a compelling alternative to traditional yellow gold, while two-tone designs offered the best of both worlds. Perhaps most striking was the adoption of traditionally feminine elements – elaborate engravings, gemstones, and even diamond accents found their way onto men's bands. Our Blaze ring embodies this bold spirit with its jet black finish contrasted by a band of copper in the middle.
The Minimalist Turn: 1990s-2000s
As the millennium approached, the pendulum swung back toward simplicity. The focus shifted to superior materials and craftsmanship, with platinum and specialized alloys taking center stage. These metals offered enduring brilliance with minimal maintenance – perfect for the practical modern man. Our Classic ring is an excellent example of this stylish, clean look.
Today's Infinite Possibilities: 2010s-Present
Contemporary men's bands strike a beautiful balance between minimalism and innovation. While clean lines remain popular, the materials palette has expanded dramatically - this is where we finally see tungsten carbide shining.
Tungsten carbide offers unparalleled durability and style at just a fraction of the cost of precious metals. It’s hypoallergenic, resistant to scratches, and ideal for any kind of lifestyle.
